About StingMate®

StingMate® is a vinegar gel with menthol. As you may know, acetic acid is the active ingredient in vinegar that is responsible for neutralizing the stinging cells of jellyfish. It has been trademarked and patent is pending. The problem with vinegar is bulk and weight. No one wants to carry a gallon of it to the beach, on a boat, dive bag, tackle box, etc…. When you pour vinegar on the sting, it runs off and you need a lot to do ensure the area is covered. Our bottle is 4 oz and it goes a long way. In addition, the gel suspends any remaining stinging cells left on the body by the jellyfish. After initial application, it is scraped off and reapplied, then rinsed off.

We believed so much in the product, that Julie flew out to a west coast aquarium and met Chad Widmer who is a world renowned expert on jellyfish. Four people tested the product by laying a 10 inch Pacific Coast Sea Nettle jellyfish across their forearms. Not just a tentacle, but the entire jellyfish. StingMate® First Aid Gel was applied and 2 hours later, out of 4 people, none had a red mark, irritation, rash, or pain. All commented on the cooling effect it had from the menthol. In this scientist’s own words, “When used as directed, StingeMate® reduced the amount of pain caused by stings from some of the nastier surface cruising jellyfish from the Northeast Pacific Ocean.”

HERE’S HOW YOU USE StingMate®…..

1) The untreated sting should not be rubbed or rinsed in fresh water…RINSE IN SALT WATER

2) Apply Stingmate® generously to cover the sting area without rubbing

3) After 1-2 minutes, gently scrape using a flat, dull edge such as a credit card or driver’s license (anything flat with an edge) to remove the gel. THIS IMPORTANT STEP REMOVES REMAINING STINGING CELLS LEFT ON THE SKIN !!!!

4) Reapplication of Stingmate® is recommended for any stinging cells that remain on the skin after the 1st. application..use twice for the Portugese Man of War

5) If minor irritation or itching persists, treat with a hydrocortisone cream

6) Always seek medical attention should symptoms persist or worsen

Hey Matt…

Just wanted to touch base with you again after this ‘09 season to find out if you had a chance to use our jellyfish sting first aid gel StingMate….my sons and I watched the season premiere this past week and, as always, we are taken with the unbelieveable difficulty involved in your work and how matter of fact the crew seems in the face of unmeasured dangers in the Bering Sea. Truly one of the best life lessons for my sons to weigh the need to make a living versus a measure of certain death with the slightest mistake.
I worked off shore drilling in my younger years; endured Hurricanes, tornadoes, blistering heat and the threat of a well explosion but by comparison, what you guys do is humbling while speaking volumes about the spirit of the men who take to dangerous waters to make a living for their family.
I hope, if any one got stung by a jellyfish this trip, you found StingMate effective. Thank you all for what you do and may you always find safe harbor.

Warm regards,

Thanks Matt….Very kind of you to respond….no secret the viewing public loves the show…..The crews of the Northwestern, Time Bandit and the Cornelia Marie crew in particular have made the viewing public understand the strength of men and the importance of family…the great thing is, it’s not an act…that’s who you guys are and that’s what makes it work….like I said before…the job is the job but the personalities make a hit show….

I’m happy for you all….If you get a chance, we’d love to post any pictures you’ve got the time to send….let us know how StingMate works for you and should you need any more for the other ships, please let us know…

Hey Ron,
Thank You for the comment and informing me of your product!! I have used a similar product sent to me by Adventure Medical Kits when we did a paddle in the Keys! Fortunately I did not have to use it. Our blog is to inform paddlers on current things that pertain to the paddling community, will have to mention this in the next few weeks as a short bulletin and link to the site. The stories usually center around some event that has just effected Jeff or I, and I did a post a while back on first aid for marine bites ,stings & punctures. This was new material that was a myth to me until confirmed about the Vodka! Still pretty cool though.

Thank You for the info, Sean Fitzgibbon Liquid Rhythm Kayaking
